Alabama is one of 50 states in the United States, located in the southeastern region of the country. Alabama is bordered to the north by Tennessee, to the south by the Gulf of Mexico and by Florida, to the east by Georgia, and to the west by Mississippi. Its population is 4,802,740 inhabitants, according to estimates by the United States Census Bureau in 2011. The French established the first European settlement in present-day Alabama, with the founding of Mobile in 1702. Southern Alabama was French from 1702 until 1763, when it came to be controlled by the United Kingdom until 1780, and by Spain until 1814. Already the north-central region of Alabama was colonized initially by the British, in 1763, annexed by the Americans in 1783, and became the 21st American state in 1819. Alabama separated from the Union on January 11, 1861, joining the Confederate States of America on February 18. 120,000 Alabama soldiers fought during the American Civil War against the states of the Union. The Confederates were defeated in 1865, and Alabama was readmitted to the Union in June 1868. Alabama é um dos 50 estados dos Estados Unidos, localizado na região sudeste do país.
