Sultan

Sultão

Sultan (in Arabic: سلطان; transl .: Sulṭān) is an Islamic title with several historical meanings. It came to be used as the title of certain Muslim rulers who in practice claimed almost total sovereignty (that is, they did not depend on any other superior ruler) but did not even qualify as caliphs; the title was also used to refer to a powerful provincial governor within the caliphate. Originally, it was an abstract Arabic noun meaning "strength," "authority," "dominance," of the Arabic term in Arabic: سلطة; transl. sulṭah, "authority", "power". The first to officially take the title was Mahmud of Ghazni, from the dynasty of the Gaznavids (998-1030), who ruled from the present Afghan city of Ghazni domains that ran from the Ganges to Mesopotamia. Later it became title of the Turks of the Seljúcida and Ottoman dynasties, as well as of the dynasty of the Aiúbidas - the one of Saladino - and the one of the mamelucos, that governed Egypt. Sultans were also the monarchs of the Maghreb: Almoravids, Almohad and other dynasties, as well as the taifas monarchs of al-Andalus.
