ETYMOLOGY OF THE WORD HÚMĂ

húmă (húme), s. f. – Argilă întrebuințată la spoitul caselor. Ngr. χῶμα (Miklosich, Vokal., III, 6; Roesler 571; Densusianu, Filologie, 448; Tiktin), poate în parte prin intermediul bg. huma (DAR; Candrea), deși această ipoteză nu este necesară, și nici cu totul convingătoare (după Conev 42, cuvîntul rom. ar proveni din bg. glina, ceea ce nu este posibil). Cf. mr. umă, pe care Pușcariu 1793 îl derivă direct din lat. humus, megl. umă care, după Capidan 314, provine din bg.Der. humos, adj. (argilos; lipicios); humărie, s. f. (teren argilos, loc de unde se scoate humă); humui, vb. (a spoi cu humă); humoaie, s. f. (Mold., humă de spoit); humu(l)tui, vb. (a transplanta răsaduri).
