Meaning of "mărát" in the Romanian dictionary

DICTIONARY

ETYMOLOGY OF THE WORD MĂRÁT

mărát (mărátă), adj. – Sărac, amărît, nenorocit. – Var. (Banat) mărac. Mr. mărat. Probabil în loc de *amărat, din amar, cf. amărît (REW 406). Der. din lat. male habitusit. malato, fr. malade (Tiktin; Candrea) pare dubioasă, ca și cea din gr. μέλας, cu suf. -atus (Capidan, LL, I, 285). Întîlnirea cu sl. márati „a se îngrijora” (Scriban) pare întîmplătoare. Var. se explicăprin încrucișarea cu sărac.

Etymology is the study of the origin of words and their changes in structure and significance.
