ETYMOLOGY OF THE WORD TOCÍ

tocí (tocésc, tocít), vb.1. A strica vîrful, a îngroșa tăișul. – 2. A strica, a uza. – 3. A învăța foarte mult, a învăța mecanic. – Megl. tuțǫs, tuțiri „a ascuți”. Sb. točiti „a ascuți”, bg. točam, rus. točitĭ „a ascuți” (Miklosich, Slaw. Elem., 49; Cihac, II, 414; Conev 66; Bogaci), din sl. točiti „a da tîrcoale”. Sl. trebuie să fi însemnat și „a face să funcționeze tocila de mînă sau de picior”; și de aici separarea sensului din rom. și din limbile slave, căci tocila strică în același timp cantul și ascute tăișul. Bg. și rus. au ambele sensuri. Ultimul sens, care aparține Arg. școlar, presupune un sens intermediar de „a pisa”. – Der. tocilă, s. f. (mașină de ascuțit; elev conștiincios și pisălog; Arg., bicicletă), din sl. (bg., rus.) točilo; tocilar, s. m. (ascuțitor; elev care învață mult); tocitoare, s. f. (ciubăr, putină), din același sl. točiti cu sensul de „a stoarce”, cf. pritoci.
