Mazar is the grave of the Muslim "saint". In the first centuries of Islamic history, worship of objects was considered a manifestation of paganism. The only exception was the worship of the Black Stone in Mecca, which dates back to the time of the prophet Muhammad. Until the middle of the X century. Even the grave of Muhammad was not the object of worship. At the end of IX c. fixed the construction of mausoleums and mosques over the graves of the Prophet's companions and revered Islamic theologians. The cult of the "saints" and their graves has been developing rapidly since the end of the 10th century. Sufism played a particularly important role in this, in which there is veneration of spiritual mentors and the tradition of visiting their graves.

Маза́р — могила мусульманского «святого». В первые века исламской истории поклонение каким-либо объектам считалось проявлением язычества. Исключение составляло разве что поклонение Чёрному камню в Мекке, ведущее своё начало со времён пророка Мухаммада. До середины X в. даже могила Мухаммада не была предметом поклонения. В конце IX в. зафиксировано сооружение мавзолеев и мечетей над могилами сподвижников Пророка и почитаемых исламских богословов. Культ «святых» и их могил быстро развивается с конца X века. Особенно большую роль в этом сыграл суфизм, в котором существует почитание духовных наставников и традиция посещения их могил.
