A diferencia de otros métodos de adquisición que requieren acceso directo al objeto, se entiende por teledetección la exploración sin contacto de la superficie terrestre, incluida la atmósfera terrestre. La observación sin contacto es posible, por ejemplo, mediante sensores soportados por aeronaves o por satélite. Sin embargo, los drones y los globos también se utilizan como plataforma. La teledetección está asociada con la fotogrametría y la geodesia por satélite. La planetología y la astronomía, por otro lado, no están asociadas con la teledetección, aunque también se utilizan sensores de sensores remotos. En el caso de la teledetección, se utilizan sistemas pasivos o activos, por lo que se pueden evaluar rangos amplios del espectro electromagnético.
