La solubilidad es propiedad de una sustancia química sólida, líquida o gaseosa llamada soluto para disolverse en un solvente sólido, líquido o gaseoso para formar una solución homogénea del soluto en el disolvente. La solubilidad de una sustancia depende fundamentalmente de las propiedades físicas y químicas del soluto y del disolvente, así como de la temperatura, la presión y el pH de la solución. La medida de la solubilidad de una sustancia en un disolvente específico se mide como la concentración de saturación, donde la adición de más soluto no aumenta la concentración de la solución y comienza a precipitar la cantidad en exceso de soluto. Muy a menudo, el disolvente es un líquido, que puede ser una sustancia pura o una mezcla. También se puede hablar de solución sólida, pero rara vez de solución en un gas. El grado de solubilidad varía ampliamente, desde infinitamente soluble, tal como etanol en agua, hasta poco soluble, tal como cloruro de plata en agua.
