Un pidgin / pɪdʒɨn /, o lenguaje pidgin, es una versión simplificada de un lenguaje que se desarrolla como un medio de comunicación entre dos o más grupos que no tienen un lenguaje en común. Es más comúnmente empleado en situaciones como el comercio, o cuando ambos grupos hablan idiomas diferentes del idioma del país en el que residen. Fundamentalmente, un pidgin es un medio simplificado de comunicación lingüística, ya que se construye improvisadamente, o por convención, entre individuos o grupos de personas. Un pidgin no es el idioma nativo de ninguna comunidad de habla, sino que es aprendido como segunda lengua. Un pidgin puede ser construido a partir de palabras, sonidos o lenguaje corporal de múltiples idiomas y culturas. Pidgins permite a las personas o un grupo de personas para comunicarse entre sí sin tener ninguna similitud en el idioma. Pidgins suelen tener bajo prestigio con respecto a otros idiomas. No todas las formas simplificadas o "rotas" de un lenguaje son pidgins. Cada pidgin tiene sus propias normas de uso que deben ser aprendidas para la competencia en el pidgin.
