Un almucantar est un cercle sur la sphère céleste parallèle à l'horizon. Deux étoiles qui se trouvent sur le même almucantar ont la même altitude. Le terme a été introduit dans l'astronomie européenne par l'astronome monastique Hermann Contractus de Reichenau, du mot arabe al-muqntarat, signifiant "tortueux, comme un arc".
