La définition formelle de la cachexie est la perte de masse corporelle qui ne peut pas être inversée de manière nutritionnelle: même si le patient atteint plus de calories, une masse corporelle maigre sera perdue, indiquant qu'une pathologie primaire est en place. La cachexie est observée chez les patients atteints de cancer, de sida, de maladie pulmonaire obstructive chronique, de sclérose en plaques, d'insuffisance cardiaque congestive, de tuberculose, de polyneuropathie amyloïde familiale, d'empoisonnement au mercure et de déficience hormonale. C'est un facteur de risque positif pour la mort, ce qui signifie que si le patient a une cachexie, les chances de décès par rapport à l'état sous-jacent sont augmentées de manière spectaculaire. Cela peut être un signe de divers troubles sous-jacents; Lorsqu'un patient présente une cachexie, un médecin considérera généralement la possibilité d'un cancer, d'une acidose métabolique, de certaines maladies infectieuses, d'une pancréatite chronique et de certains troubles auto-immuns, ou de la dépendance à l'amphétamine.

Cachexia or wasting syndrome is loss of weight, muscle atrophy, fatigue, weakness, and significant loss of appetite in someone who is not actively trying to lose weight. The formal definition of cachexia is the loss of body mass that cannot be reversed nutritionally: Even if the affected patient eats more calories, lean body mass will be lost, indicating a primary pathology is in place. Cachexia is seen in patients with cancer, AIDS, chronic obstructive lung disease, multiple sclerosis, congestive heart failure, tuberculosis, familial amyloid polyneuropathy, mercury poisoning and hormonal deficiency. It is a positive risk factor for death, meaning if the patient has cachexia, the chance of death from the underlying condition is increased dramatically. It can be a sign of various underlying disorders; when a patient presents with cachexia, a doctor will generally consider the possibility of cancer, metabolic acidosis, certain infectious diseases, chronic pancreatitis, and some autoimmune disorders, or addiction to amphetamine.
