Dans les communications et le traitement de l'information, le code est un système de règles pour convertir l'information - comme une lettre, un mot, un son, une image ou un geste - dans un autre, parfois raccourci ou secret, forme ou représentation pour la communication par canal ou stockage dans un support . Un premier exemple est la langue de l'invention, qui a permis à une personne, par le discours, de communiquer ce qu'il a vu, entendu, senti, ou pensé aux autres.
