Edom ou Idumea était une région historique semi-habité du Levant du Sud située au sud de la Judée et de la Mer Morte. Il est mentionné dans les enregistrements bibliques comme un royaume de l'âge de l'Empire de l'Ancien du 1er millénaire av. J.-C. Edom et, dans l'antiquité classique, le nom apparent Idumea a été utilisé pour désigner une zone plus petite dans la même région. Le nom Edom signifie «rouge» en hébreu, et a été donné à Esaü, le fils aîné du patriarche hébreu Isaac, une fois qu'il a mangé le «pottage rouge», que la Bible utilisait dans l'ironie du fait qu'il était né "rouge partout" ". La Torah, Tanakh et le Nouveau Testament décrivent ainsi les Edomites comme descendants d'Esaü.
