Dans la mécanique appliquée, la flexion caractérise le comportement d'un élément structurel mince soumis à une charge externe appliquée perpendiculairement à un axe longitudinal de l'élément. L'élément structurel est supposé être tel qu'une au moins une de ses dimensions est une petite fraction, typiquement 1/10 ou moins, des deux autres. Lorsque la longueur est considérablement plus longue que la largeur et l'épaisseur, l'élément est appelé faisceau. Par exemple, une tige de placard qui s'affaisse sous le poids des vêtements sur des cintres est un exemple d'un faisceau de flexion. D'autre part, une coque est une structure de forme géométrique où la longueur et la largeur sont du même ordre de grandeur, mais l'épaisseur de la structure est considérablement plus petite. Un tube court à gros diamètre, mais à paroi mince, supporté à ses extrémités et chargé latéralement est un exemple d'une coquille en flexion. En l'absence d'un qualificatif, le terme pliage est ambigu, car le pliage peut se produire localement dans tous les objets.
