En mathématiques, une hyperbole est un type de courbe lisse, située dans un plan, définie par ses propriétés géométriques ou par des équations pour lesquelles il est la solution définie. Une hyperbole a deux pièces, appelées composantes ou branches branchées, qui sont des images miroir les unes des autres et ressemblent à deux arcs infinis. L'hyperbole est l'un des quatre types de section conique, formée par l'intersection d'un avion et d'un double cône. Si le plan coupe les deux moitiés du double cône mais ne dépasse pas le sommet des cônes, la conique est une hyperbole. Les hyperboles se posent de plusieurs façons: comme la courbe représentant la fonction dans le plan cartésien, comme l'apparence d'un cercle vu de l'intérieur, comme le chemin suivi par l'ombre de la pointe d'un cadran solaire, comme la forme d'une orbite ouverte, Comme l'orbite d'un vaisseau spatial pendant une oscillation assistée par gravité d'une planète ou plus généralement tout engin spatial dépassant la vitesse d'échappement de la planète la plus proche, comme le chemin d'une comète d'apparition unique, comme la trajectoire de diffusion d'une particule subatomique, etc. Chaque branche de l'hyperbole a deux bras qui se répandent plus loin du centre de l'hyperbole.
