Lancelet
Les lancelets, également connus sous le nom d'amphioxus, comprennent environ trente-deux espèces d'agendas marines semblables à des poissons avec une distribution mondiale dans les mers tempérées et tropicales peu profondes, généralement trouvées à demi enterrées dans le sable. Ce sont les représentants modernes du sous-phylum Cephalochordata, autrefois considéré comme le groupe sœur des craniates. En Asie, ils sont récoltés commercialement comme nourriture pour les humains et les animaux domestiques. Ils sont un objet d'étude important dans la zoologie car ils fournissent des indications sur l'origine des vertébrés. Lancelets sert de point de comparaison intrigant pour tracer la façon dont les vertébrés ont évolué et adapté. Bien que les lancelets se soient séparés des vertébrés il y a plus de 520 millions d'années, leurs génomes tiennent des indices sur l'évolution, en particulier la façon dont les vertébrés ont utilisé de vieux gènes pour de nouvelles fonctions. Ils sont considérés comme semblables à la forme des vertébrés archétypiques. Les amphioxiformes sont souvent appelés «amphioxus». Amphioxus est un synonyme obsolète du genre Branchiostoma. Il est utilisé comme nom commun avec "lancelet", en particulier dans la langue anglaise. Le génome de la lancelette de Floride a été séquencé.
