Chez les vertébrés, la mandibule, la mâchoire inférieure ou la mâchoire est un os formant le crâne avec le crâne. Dans les poissons à nageoires et les premiers tétrapodes fossiles, l'os homologue à la mandibule des mammifères n'est que le plus grand des plusieurs os de la mâchoire inférieure. Chez ces animaux, on parle d'os dentaire et forme le corps de la surface externe de la mâchoire. Il est bordé ci-dessous par un certain nombre d'os spléniques, tandis que l'angle de la mâchoire est formé par un os angulaire inférieur et un os suprangulaire juste au-dessus. La surface intérieure de la mâchoire est bordée d'un os préarticulaire, tandis que l'os articulaire forme l'articulation avec le crâne propre. Enfin, un ensemble de trois os coronoïdes étroits se situent au-dessus de l'os préarticulaire. Comme son nom l'indique, la majorité des dents sont attachées à la dentaire, mais il existe généralement aussi des dents sur les os coronoïdes, et parfois aussi sur la pré-articulation. Ce modèle primitif complexe a cependant été simplifié à divers degrés dans la grande majorité des vertébrés, car les os se sont fondus ou disparus entièrement.
