La mythopée moderne, comme les romans fantastiques, le manga et la légende urbaine, avec de nombreux mythos artificiels concurrents reconnus comme fiction, soutient l'idée du mythe comme une pratique sociale moderne, pas seulement ancienne. La mythologie, dans le sens de l'étude des mythes, remonte à l'antiquité. Les premiers classifications rivales du mythe grec par Euhemerus, Phèdre de Platon et Sallustius ont été développés par les néoplatonistes et relancés par les mythographes de la Renaissance.
