Marsilea est un genre d'environ 65 espèces de fougères aquatiques de la famille des Marsileaceae. Le nom honore le naturaliste italien Luigi Ferdinando Marsigli. Ces petites plantes présentent une apparence inhabituelle et ne ressemblent pas aux fougères communes. Les noms communs incluent le trèfle à l'eau et le trèfle à quatre feuilles parce que les feuilles longues ont quatre lobes en forme de trèfle et sont maintenues au-dessus de l'eau ou submergées. Les sporocarpes de certaines espèces australiennes sont très résistants à la sécheresse, survivent jusqu'à 100 ans dans des conditions sèches. En mouillant, l'intérieur gélatineux du sporocarpe gonfle, le décompose et libère une masse de type ver qui porte sori, menant éventuellement à la germination des spores et à la fertilisation.
