La rivière Clanrye, qui traverse la ville, forme la frontière historique entre le comté d'Armagh et le comté de Down. Il se trouve à 34 miles de Belfast et à 67 miles de Dublin. Newry avait une population de 27 433 au recensement de 2001, tandis que Newry et Morne Council Area avaient une population de 87 058.
