Dans l'Antiquité Classique, un oracle était une personne ou une agence considérée comme interface d'un conseil sage ou prévision prophétique ou précognition du futur, inspirée par les dieux. En tant que tel, c'est une forme de divination. Le mot oracle vient du verbe latin ōrāre "parler" et se réfère bien au prêtre ou à la prêtresse prononçant la prédiction. En utilisation prolongée, oracle peut également se référer au site de l'oracle, et aux énoncés oraculaires eux-mêmes, appelés khrēsmoi en grec. On pensait que les orques étaient des portails par lesquels les dieux parlaient directement aux gens. Dans ce sens, ils étaient différents des voyants qui interprétaient les signes envoyés par les dieux à travers des signes d'oiseaux, des entrailles d'animaux et d'autres méthodes diverses. Les oracles les plus importants de l'antiquité grecque étaient Pythia, prêtresse d'Apollon à Delphes, et l'oracle de Dione et Zeus à Dodona dans Épire. D'autres temples d'Apollon étaient situés à Didyma sur la côte de l'Asie Mineure, à Corinthe et Bassae dans le Péloponnèse, et aux îles de Delos et Aegina dans la mer Égée.
