Un fils d'Hyperion d'Angleterre, de Penicuik II, Pensive, monté par Conn McCreary, a remporté le Kentucky Derby en quatre fois et demi. Une semaine plus tard, il prit le Preakness. Cette année, le Belmont, avait augmenté sa bourse à 50 000 $. Pensive était en tête lorsque Bounding Home a tenté de prendre la course de moins d'une demi-longueur. Pensive a été apporté aux États-Unis encore in utero par Arthur B. Hancock, qui a ensuite vendu la jument au propriétaire de Calumet Farm, Warren Wright. Wright avait hérité de Calumet de son père, William Monroe Wright, président de la Calumet Baking Powder Company.
