Le Pondo ou le Phondo sont un groupe ethnique parlant Xhosa qui ont donné leur nom à Pondoland, une sous-région comprenant une grande partie du littoral nord de la province du Cap Oriental, en Afrique du Sud. Le Pondo comprend plusieurs groupes tribaux, et après des années d'assimilation, sont classés en sous-groupe de l'amaXhosa. Leur territoire a été annexé pacifiquement à la colonie du Cap en 1884: le travail missionnaire avait déjà commencé en 1873 à l'initiative de Henry Callaway, évêque de St John's Kaffraria. La révolte de Pondo a été le résultat de la résistance du peuple Pondo contre la mise en œuvre de la Loi sur les autorités de Bantu, une partie de la législation de l'apartheid. Sous l'idéologie de l'apartheid, un développement séparé des différents groupes ethniques d'Afrique du Sud a été proposé et une partie de cela était de séparer les Africains noirs en «patrie» qui ont obtenu l'indépendance de l'Afrique du Sud. Transkei était la patrie qui a incorporé tout Pondoland et son peuple, en plus d'autres tribus Xhosa telles que le Gcaleka, dans ce qui était autrefois la province de Cape.
