Préposition et postposition
Les prépositions sont une classe de mots grammaticalement distincte dont les membres les plus centraux expriment de manière caractéristique des relations spatiales ou temporelles ou servent à marquer diverses fonctions syntaxiques et des rôles sémantiques. En ce sens que la fonction principale est relationnelle, une préposition se combine généralement avec un autre constituant pour former une phrase prépositionnelle, en reliant le complément au contexte dans lequel se produit la phrase. Le mot préposition vient du latin, une langue dans laquelle un tel mot est habituellement placé avant son complément, donc il est "pré-positionné". L'anglais est une autre langue de ce genre, bien qu'il n'y ait aucune exigence que la préposition précède un complément. Dans de nombreuses langues, les mots avec cette fonction grammaticale viennent après, pas avant, le complément. De tels mots sont communément appelés postpositions. De même, les circonscriptions consistent en deux parties qui apparaissent de chaque côté du complément. Le terme technique utilisé pour se référer collectivement aux prépositions, aux postpositions et aux circonscriptions est l'adposition. Certains linguistes utilisent le mot "préposition" au lieu de "adposition" pour les trois cas.
