Les puritains étaient un groupe de protestants anglais aux 16e et 17e siècles, y compris, mais sans s'y limiter, les calvinistes anglais. Le puritanisme en ce sens a été fondé par certains exilés mariaux du clergé peu après l'adhésion d'Elizabeth I d'Angleterre en 1558, en tant que mouvement militant au sein de l'Église d'Angleterre. Dans les temps modernes, le mot «puritain» est souvent utilisé pour signifier «contre plaisir». Historiquement, le mot a été utilisé peoritement pour caractériser le groupe protestant en tant qu'étons extrémistes, semblables aux Cathares de France et, selon Thomas Fuller dans son Histoire de l'Église, remontent à 1564. L'archevêque Matthew Parker de cette époque l'a utilisé et "précisian" avec Le sens du «stickler» moderne. Les puritains ont été empêchés de changer l'église établie de l'intérieur et ont été sévèrement restreints en Angleterre par des lois contrôlant la pratique de la religion. Leurs points de vue, cependant, ont été transportés par l'émigration des congrégations aux Pays-Bas et par le clergé évangélique en Irlande et ont été répandus dans la société laïque et dans certaines parties du système éducatif, en particulier certains collèges de l'Université de Cambridge.
