Rabaul
Rabaul est un canton dans la province de l'est de la Nouvelle-Bretagne, en Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guinée. La ville était la capitale de la province et la colonie la plus importante dans la province jusqu'à sa destruction en 1994 par la chute des cendres d'une éruption volcanique. Au cours de l'éruption, des cendres ont été envoyées à des milliers de mètres dans l'air et la pluie de cendres suivante a provoqué l'effondrement de 80% des bâtiments de Rabaul. Après l'éruption, la capitale a été transférée à Kokopo, à environ 20 kilomètres. Rabaul est continuellement menacé par l'activité volcanique en raison de sa construction sur le bord de la caldeira Rabaul, une caldeira inondée d'un grand bouclier pyrotechnique. Rabaul était connu sous le nom de Simpsonhafen lors de l'administration allemande de la Nouvelle-Guinée qui contrôlait la zone entre 1884 et formellement jusqu'en 1919. À partir de 1910, Rabaul était le quartier général de la Nouvelle-Guinée allemande jusqu'à ce qu'il soit capturé par l'Empire britannique pendant la Première Guerre mondiale, alors qu'il est devenu la capitale de la Territoire mandaté par l'Australie de la Nouvelle-Guinée jusqu'à 1937 lorsqu'il a été détruit par le volcan. Pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, il a été capturé par les Japonais en 1942 et est devenu la base principale de l'activité militaire et navale japonaise dans le Pacifique Sud.
