Socotra
Socotra, également épeautée Soqotra, est un petit archipel de quatre îles de l'océan Indien. La plus grande île, également appelée Socotra, représente environ 95% de la masse continentale de l'archipel. Il se trouve à environ 240 kilomètres à l'est de la Corne de l'Afrique et à 380 kilomètres au sud de la péninsule arabique. L'île est très isolée et un tiers de sa vie végétale se trouve nulle part ailleurs sur la planète. Il a été décrit comme «l'endroit le plus étranger sur Terre». L'île mesure 132 kilomètres de longueur et 49,7 kilomètres de largeur. Socotra fait partie du Yémen. Il s'agissait depuis longtemps d'un «Gouvernorat d'Adan». En 2004, il a été attaché au gouvernorat de Hadhramaut, qui est beaucoup plus proche de l'île que «Adan».
