Sparta, ou Lacedaemon, / ˌlæsədiːmən / était une ville-état proéminente dans la Grèce antique, située sur les rives de la rivière Eurotas dans la Laconie, dans le sud-est du Péloponnèse. Il est apparu comme une entité politique autour du 10ème siècle av. J.-C., alors que les Doriens envahissants subjuguaient la population locale non dorienne. Vers 650 av. J.-C., il est devenu la puissance terrestre militaire dominante dans la Grèce antique. Compte tenu de sa prééminence militaire, Sparte a été reconnue comme le leader général des forces grecques combinées pendant les guerres gréco-perses. Entre 431 et 404 av. J.-C., Sparte était le principal ennemi d'Athènes pendant la guerre du Péloponnèse, d'où elle a été victorieuse, bien que très coûteuse. La défaite de Sparte par Thèbes dans la bataille de Leuctra en 371 avant JC a mis fin au rôle éminent de Sparte en Grèce. Cependant, il a maintenu son indépendance politique jusqu'à la conquête romaine de la Grèce en 146 avant JC. Il a subi une longue période de déclin, surtout au Moyen Âge, lorsque de nombreux Spartiates ont déménagé à Mystras. La Sparta moderne est la capitale de l'unité régionale grecque de Laconia et un centre de traitement de produits tels que les agrumes et les olives.
