Suspect

Dans le jargon de l'application de la loi, un suspect est une personne connue soupçonnée d'avoir commis un crime. La police et les journalistes aux États-Unis utilisent souvent incorrectement le mot suspect lorsqu'ils se réfèrent à l'auteur de l'infraction. L'auteur est le voleur, l'agresseur, le contrefacteur, etc., la personne qui a effectivement commis le crime. La distinction entre le suspect et l'auteur reconnaît que le suspect n'est pas connu pour avoir commis l'infraction, alors que l'auteur, qui n'a peut-être pas encore été soupçonné d'avoir commis un crime, n'est donc pas nécessairement suspect, c'est celui qui l'a fait réellement. Le suspect peut être une personne différente de l'auteur, ou il n'y a pas eu de crime réel, ce qui signifie qu'il n'y a pas d'auteur. Une erreur commune dans les rapports de police est une description de témoin du suspect. Souvent, il est indiqué que la police cherche le suspect, lorsqu'il n'y a pas de suspect; La police pourrait chercher un suspect, mais ils cherchent sûrement l'auteur et, très souvent, il est impossible de dire par un tel rapport de police s'il y a un suspect ou non.
