À la recherche du temps perdu - traduit aussi comme souvenir des choses passées - est un roman en sept volumes de Marcel Proust. Son travail le plus important, il est connu à la fois pour sa longueur et son thème de la mémoire involontaire, l'exemple le plus célèbre étant l'épisode de la madeleine. Il a gagné la renommée en anglais en traduction par CK Scott Moncrieff et Terence Kilmartin comme souvenir des choses passées, mais le titre In Search of Lost Time, un rendu littéral des français, a gagné son utilisation depuis que DJ Enright l'a adopté pour sa traduction révisée publiée en 1992. Le roman a commencé à prendre forme en 1909. Proust a continué à travailler jusqu'à ce que sa dernière maladie à l'automne de 1922 l'oblige à rompre. Proust a établi la structure dès le début, mais même après le début des volumes, il a continué à ajouter du nouveau matériel et a édité un volume après l'autre pour publication. Les trois derniers des sept volumes contiennent des oublis et des passages fragmentés ou non polis tels qu'ils existaient sous forme de projet au décès de l'auteur; La publication de ces pièces a été supervisée par son frère Robert. Le travail a été publié en France entre 1913 et 1927.
