En géométrie, la ligne tangente (ou simplement tangente) à une courbe plane à un point donné est la ligne droite qui "touche juste" la courbe à ce point. De façon informelle, c'est une ligne à travers une paire de points infiniment proches sur la courbe. Plus précisément, on dit qu'une ligne droite est une tangente d'une courbe y = f (x) à un point x = c sur la courbe si la ligne traverse le point (c, f (c)) sur la courbe et a Pente f '(c) où f' est la dérivée de f. Une définition similaire s'applique aux courbes et courbes de l'espace dans l'espace euclidien n-dimensionnel. Comme il traverse le point où la ligne tangente et la courbe se rencontrent, appelée point de tangence, la ligne tangente "va dans la même direction" que la courbe, et c'est donc la meilleure approximation linéaire de la courbe à ce niveau point. De même, le plan tangent à une surface à un point donné est le plan qui "touche juste" la surface à ce point. La première définition de la tangente dans le dictionnaire est une ligne géométrique, une courbe, un plan ou une surface courbe qui touche une autre courbe ou surface en un point mais ne l'intersecte pas. Une autre définition de la tangente est une fonction trigonométrique qui, dans un triangle rectangle, est le rapport de la longueur du côté opposé à celui du côté adjacent; le rapport du sinus au cosinus tan. La tangente est également la partie droite sur une ligne de levé entre les courbes.
