Dans la morphologie linguistique, un transfix est un appendice discontinu qui est inséré dans une racine de mots, comme dans les systèmes de morphologie racine et modèle, comme ceux de nombreuses langues sémitiques. Un appendice discontinu est un appendice dont les composants phonétiques ne sont pas séquentiels en un seul mot, et à la place, sont répartis entre les téléphones qui composent la racine ou autour de ceux-ci. Le mot racine est souvent une série abstraite de trois consonnes, bien qu'il existe des racines consonnes simples, bilatérales et quadrilatérales. Un exemple de racine triconsonantique serait d-r-b en arabe, qui peut être infléchi pour créer des formes telles que daraba 'to beat' et idribunna 'les battre'. Alors que les racines triconsonaires sont largement considérées comme l'état le plus commun, certains linguistes posent que les racines bilatérales peuvent en fait être la valeur par défaut, mais au moins un savant est sceptique de la légitimité de ces revendications. Les transferts sont placés dans ces racines dans des positions assignées, dictées par des modèles qui sont liés à la signification spécifique d'une inflexion ou d'une dérivation donnée.
