La retenue d'impôt
Une retenue à la source, également appelée taxe de rétention, est une obligation gouvernementale pour le payeur d'un élément de revenu de retenir ou de déduire la taxe du paiement et de payer cette taxe au gouvernement. Dans la plupart des juridictions, la retenue d'impôt s'applique aux revenus d'emploi. Beaucoup de juridictions exigent également la retenue d'impôt sur les paiements d'intérêts ou de dividendes. Dans la plupart des juridictions, il existe des obligations fiscales supplémentaires si le bénéficiaire du revenu réside dans une juridiction différente et, dans ces circonstances, la retenue à la source s'applique parfois aux redevances, au loyer ou même à la vente de biens immobiliers. Les gouvernements utilisent la retenue d'impôt comme moyen de lutter contre l'évasion fiscale et imposent parfois des impotés en cas d'imposition différée si le destinataire a été délinquant dans le dépôt de déclarations de revenus ou dans des industries où l'évasion fiscale est perçue comme commune. En règle générale, la retenue à la source est traitée comme un paiement au titre du passif d'impôt final du destinataire.
