Golem - dans la tradition juive, une créature faite d'argile en forme d'homme, mais sans une âme qui comprend le nesama, et donc aussi la capacité de parole. Ce mot n'apparaît qu'une seule fois dans le Psaume 135: 15-17, qui est une tradition juive dans la bouche d'Adam. À ce stade, il est traduit comme un embryon, mais signifie probablement quelque chose sans forme, dépourvu de forme. Au Moyen Âge, ils ont été identifiés avec la notion grecque de matière informe - η ὕλη. Certains de la tradition juive traitent aussi Adam avant de lui donner un souffle divin comme un golem. Créer des golems par les gens implique de répéter le processus de la création divine. Puisque l'on croyait avoir été fait en utilisant l'alphabet hébreu, également par leurs systèmes respectifs, des tentatives ont été faites pour refaire cela. Les premiers passages créés par l'homme incluent le Talmud. Plus tard, ces pratiques furent associées à l'utilisation magique du Traité Sefer Jecira et à la reconstruction de la structure de la création divine.

Jako że uważano, iż została ona dokonana za pomocą liter alfabetu hebrajskiego, również przez odpowiednie ich układy próbowano ponowić ten akt. Pierwsze przekazy o golemie utworzonym przez człowieka zawiera Talmud. Później na stałe praktyki te związane były z magicznym wykorzystaniem traktatu Sefer Jecira i odtworzeniem podanej tam struktury boskiej kreacji.
