Prototype - Un dispositif, circuit ou programme conçu et construit pour démontrer la capacité de construire un dispositif cible. Pendant la construction du prototype, les ingénieurs introduisent leurs nouvelles idées pour la première fois. Si vous pouvez construire un prototype fonctionnel, vous pouvez commencer à construire le périphérique final. Souvent, lors de la conception, certains phénomènes réels liés à la structure sont omis. Le prototype vous permet de découvrir leur impact inconnu et de faire des corrections. Si le premier prototype échoue, le prototype suivant est construit pour l'appareil qui répond aux hypothèses. Często podczas projektowania niektóre rzeczywiste zjawiska związane z konstrukcją zostają pominięte. Prototyp pozwala na odkrycie ich nieznanego wpływu i wprowadzenie korekt. Jeżeli pierwszy prototyp nie jest udany, to buduje się kolejne, aż do uzyskania urządzenia spełniającego założenia. Prototyp może fizycznie bardzo różnić się od ostatecznego urządzenia, jeżeli chcemy sprawdzić tylko pewną jego cechę. Zasady te nie znajdują jednak w pełni zastosowania w budownictwie okrętowym, gdzie okręt prototypowy jest najczęściej pierwszym okrętem serii jednostek swojego typu, stając się zwykle okrętem operacyjnym. Ujawnione w trakcie testów stoczniowych i służby wady konstrukcyjne okrętu prototypowego, są sukcesywnie poprawiane w kolejnych jednostkach danego typu.
