Ragtime è un predecessore del jazz, originario degli Stati Uniti, che ha avuto il periodo di fioritura tra il 1899 e il 1914. È considerato "musica classica dell'America" e oggi è percepito essenzialmente come uno stile di pianoforte, ma è stato prima suonato su altri strumenti e da grandi gruppi. La solita interpretazione etimologica deriva dal nome Ragtime da un tempo sconnesso, che si riferisce al piombo di melodia sincopato e al suo contrasto con il rigido ritmo dell'allungamento.
