Nella grammatica latina e inglese, il gerund è una forma verbale non finita che può funzionare come un sostantivo. Il gerund inglese finisce in -ing; Lo stesso modulo verbo serve anche come participio presente inglese e come un sostantivo verbale puro. Il gerund è la forma che indica l'azione del verbo. In alcuni casi, un sostantivo che termina in -ing a volte serve come gerund, mentre in altre occasioni serve come un non-gerund che indica il prodotto risultante da un'azione. Quest'ultimo caso può spesso essere distinto dalla presenza di un determinante prima che il nome, come quello, uno o lei in questi esempi. Il gerund latino è una forma verbale che si comporta in modo analogo a un sostantivo, anche se può apparire solo in alcuni casi obliqui. In relazione ad altre lingue, il termine gerund può essere applicato ad una forma che abbia usi similari come i gerundi latini e inglesi, o in alcuni casi a varie altre forme verbali non finite, come i participi adverbiali. Gerund proviene dal gerundio latino, che deriva proprio dal gerundismo del verbo gero latino, ovvero gerundo, che significa "essere svolto".
