Giaour o Gawur o Ghiaour, gâvur scritto in turco moderno, è una festa offensiva religiosa ea volte etnica usata dai musulmani in Turchia e nei Balcani per descrivere tutti i non musulmani, con particolare riferimento alle popolazioni cristiane vicine come i Greci, gli Armeni, i Bulgari , I serbi, i macedoni etnici, i romeni e gli assiri. Il termine è considerato altamente offensivo dai cristiani nei Balcani. La Enciclopedia Britannica del 1911 descrisse il termine come segue: Giaour, una parola usata dai turchi per descrivere tutti coloro che non sono musulmani, con particolare riferimento ai cristiani. La parola, prima impiegata come termine di disprezzo e rimprovero, è diventata così generale che nella maggior parte dei casi non è previsto alcun insulto nel suo uso; Allo stesso modo, in alcune parti della Cina, il termine diavolo straniero è divenuto nulla di offesa. Una rigorosa analogia al giaour si trova nel cafir arabo, o non credente, che è così comunemente in uso da diventare il nome proprio dei popoli e dei paesi.
