La fibra Istle o tampico è il nome generale di una fibra vegetale dura ottenuta da una serie di piante messicane, principalmente specie di Agave e Yucca. Istle o ixtle vengono utilizzati anche come il nome comune delle piante che producono la fibra. Ixtle è anche il nome comune di una specie di bromeliad, Aechmea magdalenae, cresciuta nel sud del Messico per le sue fibre setose. La fibra Istle viene utilizzata come sostituto di setole animali nella fabbricazione di spazzole e anche per la realizzazione di cordoni e corde. I generi particolari di istle includono: ▪ Jaumave istle, prodotto da Agave funkiana, si dice che sia il miglior grado. Il nome deriva dalla valle del Jaumave nello stato messicano di Tamaulipas, dove è cresciuto. La fibra viene ottenuta dalle giovani foglie interne che formano il germoglio centrale. La fibra di Jaumave istle è di solito 20-40 di lunghezza, quasi bianca e quasi forte e flessibile come il sisal, prodotto da Agave sisaliana. ▪ Tula istle è prodotto da Agave lechuguilla o Agave univittata. Il nome deriva dalla città di Tula, anche nello stato messicano di Tamaulipas.
