Nell'antichità classica, un oracolo era una persona o un'agenzia ritenuta interfacciabile con consigli saggi o predizioni profetiche o precognizioni del futuro, ispirate agli dèi. Come tale, è una forma di divinazione. La parola oracolo proviene dal verbo latino òrāre "per parlare" e si riferisce correttamente al sacerdote o alla sacerdotessa pronunciando la previsione. In uso esteso, l'oracolo può anche riferirsi al sito dell'oracolo e alle stesse parole oracolari, chiamate khrēsmoi in greco. Gli oracoli sono stati considerati portali attraverso i quali gli dèi parlato direttamente alle persone. In questo senso erano diversi dai veggenti che interpretavano segni inviati dagli dèi attraverso i segni di uccelli, le entrate degli animali e altri metodi diversi. Gli oracoli più importanti dell'antichità greca erano Pythia, sacerdotessa ad Apollo a Delfi, e l'oracolo di Dione e Zeus a Dodona in Epirus. Altri templi di Apollo erano situati a Didyma, sulla costa dell'Asia Minore, a Corinto e Bassae nel Peloponneso e alle isole di Delos e Aegina nel Mar Egeo.
