Un assioma, o un postulato, è una premessa o un punto di partenza del ragionamento. Come concepito classica, un assioma è una premessa così evidente da essere accettata come vera senza controversie. La parola deriva dal greco ἀξίωμα (āxīoma) 'quello che si pensa degno o in forma' o 'quello che si riconosce come evidente'. Come usato nella logica moderna, un assioma è semplicemente una premessa o un punto di partenza per il ragionamento. Gli assiomi definiscono e delimitano il regno dell'analisi; La verità relativa di un assioma viene presa per scontata nel particolare dominio dell'analisi e serve come punto di partenza per dedurre e inferire altre relative verità.
