Eine berührungsfreie Beobachtung wird zum Beispiel durch flugzeuggetragene oder satellitengetragene Sensoren ermöglicht. Vereinzelt kommen aber auch Drohnen und Ballons als Plattform zum Einsatz. Der Fernerkundung zugeordnet sind Photogrammetrie und Satellitengeodäsie. Dagegen sind Planetologie und Astronomie nicht der Fernerkundung zugeordnet, obwohl auch hier Fernerkundungssensoren zum Einsatz kommen. Bei der Fernerkundung finden passive oder aktive Systeme Verwendung, wobei weite Bereiche des elektromagnetischen Spektrums ausgewertet werden können.
