Aeschynomene elaphroxylon também conhecido como uma árvore de madeira ambarina, pith ou madeira de Balsa é um arbusto grande comum a pequena árvore do gênero Aeschynomene na família Fabaceae. Pode crescer até 9 m de altura, com hastes espinhosas e pares de espinhos substanciais sob a base de folhas. A. elaphroxylon é indígena de partes da África tropical. Geralmente, cresce por água e em solos com água registrada, como por rios, lagos e pântanos em países como Gana e Nigéria, mas é difundido em toda a África tropical para a Etiópia e o Sudão, e para o sul e o leste no Zimbábue. As sementes de A. elaphroxylon foram conhecidas por serem viáveis depois de serem enterradas por alguns anos nos bancos de águas cheias, onde cresce bem. As sementes estão contidas em vagens que crescem em espirais achatadas e eretas na árvore. A árvore possui nódulos de fixação de nitrogênio em seu caule. Na Etiópia, as espécies podem ser encontradas no Parque Nacional Nechisar.
