Clima
O clima é uma medida do padrão médio de variação de temperatura, umidade, pressão atmosférica, vento, precipitação, contagem de partículas atmosféricas e outras variáveis meteorológicas em uma dada região durante longos períodos de tempo. O clima é diferente do clima, pois o tempo apenas descreve as condições de curto prazo dessas variáveis em uma determinada região. O clima de uma região é gerado pelo sistema climático, que tem cinco componentes: atmosfera, hidrosfera, criosfera, superfície terrestre e biosfera. O clima de um local é afetado pela sua latitude, terreno e altitude, bem como por corpos d'água próximos e suas correntes. Os climas podem ser classificados de acordo com a média e os intervalos típicos de diferentes variáveis, mais comumente temperatura e precipitação. O esquema de classificação mais utilizado foi desenvolvido originalmente por Wladimir Köppen. O sistema Thornthwaite, em uso desde 1948, incorpora evapotranspiração juntamente com a informação de temperatura e precipitação e é usado no estudo da diversidade de espécies animais e dos possíveis efeitos das mudanças climáticas.
