Castor e Pollux
Na mitologia grega e romana, Castor e Pollux ou Polydeuces eram irmãos gêmeos, conhecidos como Dioskouri. Sua mãe era Leda, mas Castor era o filho mortal de Tyndareus, o rei de Esparta, e Pollux, o divino filho de Zeus, que seduziu Leda sob a aparência de um cisne. Embora os relatos de seu nascimento sejam variados, às vezes eles dizem ter nascido de um ovo, juntamente com suas irmãs gêmeas Helen de Troy e Clytemnestra. Em latim, os gêmeos também são conhecidos como Gemini ou Castores. Quando Castor foi morto, Pollux pediu a Zeus que o deixasse compartilhar sua própria imortalidade com seu gêmeo para mantê-los juntos e eles foram transformados na constelação dos Gêmeos. O casal era considerado como os patronos dos marinheiros, a quem eles apareceram como o fogo de São Elmo, e também estavam associados à equitação.
