O medo é uma emoção induzida por uma ameaça percebida por entidades vivas, que causa uma mudança na função cerebral e orgânica e, finalmente, uma mudança de comportamento, como fugir, esconder ou congelar eventos traumáticos. O medo pode ocorrer em resposta a um estímulo específico que acontece no presente ou a uma situação futura, que é percebida como risco para a saúde ou a vida, status, poder, segurança ou no caso de riqueza humana ou qualquer coisa que seja valiosa. A resposta ao medo decorre da percepção de perigo que leva ao confronto ou escape de / evitando a ameaça, que em casos extremos de medo pode ser uma resposta de congelamento ou paralisia. Em seres humanos e animais, o medo é modulado pelo processo de cognição e aprendizagem. Assim, o medo foi julgado como racional ou apropriado e irracional ou inapropriado. Um medo irracional é chamado de fobia. Psicólogos como John B. Watson, Robert Plutchik e Paul Ekman sugeriram que existe apenas um pequeno conjunto de emoções básicas ou inatas e que o medo é uma delas. Este conjunto de hipóteses inclui emoções como alegria, tristeza, susto, medo, horror, pânico, ansiedade, reação de estresse agudo e raiva.

Fear may occur in response to a specific stimulus happening in the present, or to a future situation, which is perceived as risk to health or life, status, power, security, or in the case of humans wealth or anything held valuable. The fear response arises from the perception of danger leading to confrontation with or escape from/avoiding the threat, which in extreme cases of fear can be a freeze response or paralysis. In humans and animals, fear is modulated by the process of cognition and learning. Thus fear has been judged as rational or appropriate and irrational or inappropriate. An irrational fear is called a phobia. Psychologists such as John B. Watson, Robert Plutchik, and Paul Ekman have suggested that there is only a small set of basic or innate emotions and that fear is one of them. This hypothesized set includes such emotions as joy, sadness, fright, dread, horror, panic, anxiety, acute stress reaction and anger.
