Grotesco
A palavra grotesca vem da mesma raiz latina como "gruta", que se originou do "lugar escondido" do krypto grego, que significa uma pequena caverna ou vazio. O significado original foi restrito a um estilo extravagante de arte decorativa romana antiga redescoberta e depois copiada em Roma no final do século XV. As "cavernas" eram, de fato, salas e corredores da Domus Aurea, o complexo do palácio inacabado iniciado por Nero após o Grande Fogo de Roma em 64 dC, que havia se tornado coberto e enterrado, até que eles foram quebrados novamente, principalmente de cima.
