O alinhamento da estrutura de dados é a forma como os dados são organizados e acessados na memória do computador. Consiste em dois problemas separados, mas relacionados: alinhamento de dados e preenchimento de estrutura de dados. Quando um computador moderno lê ou escreve para um endereço de memória, ele fará isso em pedaços de tamanho de palavra ou maiores. O alinhamento de dados significa colocar os dados em um deslocamento de memória igual a um múltiplo do tamanho da palavra, o que aumenta o desempenho do sistema devido à forma como a CPU processa a memória. Para alinhar os dados, pode ser necessário inserir alguns bytes sem sentido entre o final da última estrutura de dados e o início do próximo, que é o preenchimento da estrutura de dados. Por exemplo, quando o tamanho da palavra do computador é de 4 bytes, os dados a serem lidos devem estar em um deslocamento de memória que é um múltiplo de 4. Quando este não é o caso, e. os dados começam no 14º byte em vez do 16º byte, então o computador deve ler dois pedaços de 4 bytes e fazer algum cálculo antes que os dados solicitados tenham sido lidos, ou pode gerar uma falha de alinhamento. Mesmo que a estrutura de dados anterior termine no 13º byte, a próxima estrutura de dados deve começar no 16º byte.
