Jean-Philippe Rameau
Jean-Philippe Rameau foi um dos mais importantes compositores franceses e teóricos da música da era barroca. Ele substituiu Jean-Baptiste Lully como o compositor dominante da ópera francesa e também é considerado o principal compositor francês para o cravo do seu tempo, ao lado de François Couperin. Pouco se sabe sobre os primeiros anos de Rameau, e não foi até a década de 1720 que ele ganhou fama como principal teórico da música com o seu Tratado de Harmonia. e também nos anos seguintes como compositor de obras-primas para o cravo, que circulou por toda a Europa. Ele tinha quase 50 anos antes de embarcar na carreira de ópera em que hoje sua reputação reside hoje. Sua estréia, Hippolyte et Aricie, causou uma grande agitação e foi violentamente atacada pelo uso revolucionário da harmonia pelos adeptos do estilo de música de Lully. No entanto, a preeminência de Rameau no campo da ópera francesa foi logo reconhecida, e mais tarde foi atacado como um compositor "estabelecido" por aqueles que favoreceram a ópera italiana durante a controvérsia conhecida como Querelle des Bouffons na década de 1750.
