A pronunciação inglesa sitar: / sɪtɑr / é um instrumento de cordas arrancadas usado principalmente na música Hindustani e na música clássica indiana. O instrumento desceu de um instrumento persa similar, mas simples, chamado Setar e seu antecessor o Dutar. A sitar floresceu nos séculos 16 e 17 e chegou à sua forma atual na Índia do século 18. Ele deriva seu timbre distintivo e ressonância de cordas simpáticas, design de ponte, um longo pescoço oco e uma câmara ressonante de calabacinha. Usado amplamente em todo o subcontinente indiano, o sitar tornou-se popularmente conhecido em todo o mundo através do trabalho de Ravi Shankar, no início dos anos 1950 e início dos anos 1960. O sitar viu mais uso na música popular depois que os Beatles apresentaram o sitar em suas composições "Norwegian Wood", "Within You Without You", "Tomorrow Never Knows" e "Love You To".
